Martignargues hides a beautiful guesthouse
Whether you arrive from the top or the bottom of the village, Martignargues is captivating. It’s a village of 430 inhabitants, nestled discreetly against the hillside, which protects it from the mistral winds.
The site pre-dates Jesus Christ. We’ve heard about the remains of a Gallic villa north of the current church. Then came the Roman occupation, making way for a large fortified farm, as was customary in the Middle Ages with its thick walls and gates, its parapet walk…
La Maison du Passage retains within it the vaulted passage that was one of the defensive entrance gates to the village, as well as a watchtower from which communication with neighbouring villages occurred in case of an attack. Similar towers dotted the entire territory between Uzès and Toulouse.
The church affirms its Catholic roots in a Protestant region.
It’s probably worth underlining the paradox of the only major battle won by the Camisards i on communal territory, which vexed Louis XIV so much that he reinforced the support allocated to the annihilation of the Protestant rebellion. This indeed is a beautiful village, with its well-preserved houses! And most importantly, it’s not a tourist village; it’s inhabited by winemakers, olive growers, and villagers dedicated to preserving Martignargues.
In the valley flows the river Droude. You will certainly follow it when you arrive and pass by the Paradis Olive Mill, known for producing the best olive oils in France - repeatedly winning awards at the Paris Agricultural Show. You will see olive groves everywhere as you walk on the surrounding paths,… They’re beautiful, good, and healthy!
Walks or hikes? They are plentiful.
